MAURICE JARRE (13 September 1924 – 29 March 2009)

Another legend of film scores has passed away. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends, and of course, his legions of fans.

Jarre composed several concert works, he is best known for his film scores for motion pictures, particularly those of David Lean: Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and A Passage to India (1984). All three of these scores won Academy Awards. Other notable scores of his include The Message (1976), Dead Poets Society (1989) and Ghost (1990). Jarre was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1961 Jarre's music career experienced a major turn when the movie producer Sam Spiegel asked him to write the score of Lawrence of Arabia which won Jarre his first Academy Award.[3] He followed with The Train (1964) for director John Frankenheimer, then had another great success in Doctor Zhivago, which earned him his second Oscar. His score for David Lean's Ryan's Daughter (1970), set in Ireland, completely eschews traditional Irish music styles, owing to Lean's preferences. The song "It was a Good Time," from Ryan's Daughter went on to be recorded by musical stars such as Liza Minnelli who used it in her critically acclaimed television special Liza With a Z as well as others during the 1970s. He contributed the music for Luchino Visconti's The Damned (1969), John Huston's The Man Who Would Be King (1975).

He was again nominated for an Academy award for scoring The Message (aka Mohammad, Messenger of God) in 1976 for the director and producer Moustapha Akkad. He followed with Top Secret! (1984), Julia and Julia (1987), Dead Poets Society (1989)—for which he won a British Academy Award—and Jacob's Ladder (1990).

In the 1970s and 1980s, Jarre turned his hand to science fiction, with scores for The Island at the Top of the World (1974), Enemy Mine (1985) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). The latter is written for full orchestra, augmented by a chorus, four grand pianos, a pipe organ, digeridoo, fujara, a battery of exotic percussion and three ondes Martenot (which feature in several of Jarre's other scores, including Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, The Bride) and Prancer (1989).

In 1990 Jarre was again nominated for an Academy Award scoring the supernatural love story / thriller Ghost. His music for the final scene of the film is based on "Unchained Melody" composed by fellow film composer Alex North. Other films for which he provided the music include Witness (1985), his passionate love theme from Fatal Attraction (1987), and the moody electronic soundscapes of After Dark, My Sweet (1990).

His television work includes the score for the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth (1977), directed by Franco Zeffirelli, Shogun (1980), and the theme for PBS's Great Performances.

Jarre scored his last film in 2001, a TV movie about the Holocaust entitled Uprising.

ANGELA MORLEY (1924-2009)

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Angela Morley. A lovely lady and a wonderful composer.

Morley was born in Leeds, Yorkshire on 10 March 1924. Her birth name was Walter (Wally) Stott. She attributes her entry into successful composing and arranging largely to the influence and encouragement of the Canadian light music composer Robert Farnon.

Morley was originally a composer of light music, with the jaunty Rotten Row her best known piece. Also notable is A Canadian in Mayfair, a homage to Robert Farnon's Portrait of a Flirt.

In 1953, she began a long association with the Philips record label, arranging for and accompanying the company's artists, as well as releasing records under her own name, including the 1958 LP 'London Pride'.

She is also remembered for writing the theme tune and incidental music for Hancock's Half Hour and was the musical director for The Goon Show from the third series in 1952 to the last show in 1960. Another very short, but fondly remembered, theme was the 12-notes-long "Ident Zoom-2", written for Lew Grade's Associated TeleVision (ATV) and in use from the introduction of colour television in 1969 until the demise of ATV in 1981.

In the 1960s she worked with Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield and the first three highly regarded solo albums by Scott Walker. In 1962 and 1963, she arranged the United Kingdom entries for the Eurovision Song Contest, Ring-A-Ding Girl and Say Wonderful Things, both sung by Ronnie Carroll. The former was conducted on the Eurovision stage in Luxembourg by her as well.

In 1969, she scored 'The Looking Glass War' (from a John Le Carré spy novel featuring a very young Anthony Hopkins), 'When Eight Bells Toll' (another Anthony Hopkins movie) and 'Captain Nemo and the Underwater City'.

Morley orchestrated, arranged, and supervised the music for the final musical film collaboration of Lerner and Loewe, The Little Prince (1974). In 1976 she was music supervisor, arranger, and conductor for the Sherman Brothers' musical adaptation of the Cinderella story, The Slipper and the Rose. She won Oscar nominations for both films. Additionally, she wrote most of the score for the 1978 film version of Watership Down, although the prelude and opening was by Malcolm Williamson. From about this point she began a collaboration with John Williams, the composer for Star Wars and other films, though working in an uncredited capacity.

During the 1980s she wrote numerous arrangements for the Boston Pops and scored many episodes of TV shows, including Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest, and Hotel.

SELECTIONS FROM FILM SCORES #1 -
Miles Goodman

http://rapidshare.com/files/171534567/MG__FS_1.zip

Here's a very rare promo of selections of Film Music #1. There are some wonderful scores here from the late Miles Goodman. He died much too young.
I'll post #2 in the coming weeks.

Also, if anyone happens to have #3 in this series, I would be very grateful if you would post a link for it!
:)

N-Joy!

Born in Los Angeles in 1949, Mr. Goodman was a graduate of Antioch College in Ohio. He became interested in film scoring through his cousin, Johnny Mandel, an Oscar-winning film composer. When Mr. Goodman went to Hollywood, he met Oscar Castro-Neves, who became his friend and music partner. They worked together for 30 years.

Mr. Goodman worked with Mr. Mandel on the music for such movies as ''Being There'' and ''The Verdict.'' He later helped orchestrate or score music for films including ''Footloose'' and ''La Bamba.''

Mr. Goodman and Mr. Castro-Neves were also co-producers of a series of well-reviewed jazz albums. They arranged 12 selections for the successful ''Billie Holiday Songbook'' and for ''Color and Light: Jazz Sketches on Sondheim,'' which featured jazz artists interpreting the works of Stephen Sondheim.

NEAL HEFTI (October 29, 1922 – October 11, 2008)

One of the first soundtracks I bought years ago was "Lord Love A Duck" by Neal Hefti. I enjoyed the quirkiness of this score, and from that point on, I was hooked-on-Hefti!
Neal was right up there with the best pop-jazz composers of the time.

I'm so saddened to hear of his passing, and my condolences are with his family and friends.

He began arranging professionally in his teens, when he wrote charts for Nat Towles. He became a prominent composer and arranger while playing trumpet for Woody Herman; while working for Herman he provided new arrangements for "Woodchopper's Ball" and "Blowin' Up a Storm," and composed "The Good Earth" and "Wild Root." After leaving Herman's band in 1946, Hefti concentrated on arranging and composing, although he occasionally led his own bands. He is especially known for his charts for Count Basie such as "Li'l Darlin'" and "Cute".

In the 1960s and later he composed and arranged mainly for movies and television. He wrote the background music for movies such as Sex and the Single Girl, How to Murder Your Wife, Synanon, Boeing Boeing, Harlow, Lord Love a Duck, Duel at Diablo, Oh Dad Poor Dad Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad, and Barefoot in the Park.

His best-known contributions of this period are the themes for the TV series Batman and The Odd Couple.

OH DAD, POOR DAD, MAMMA'S HUNG YOU IN THE CLOSET AND I'M FEELIN' SO SAD

REGARDING HENRY (Rejected Score)
Georges Delerue

http://rapidshare.com/files/136377587/GD_RGH.zip.html

Here is one of holy grails of rejected scores as far as I'm concerned. Hans Zimmer as most of you know, rescored the film. This is fairly short, and there is suppose to be a longer version floating around. I've never seen one. It's truly Delerue at his best, and a shame that it was rejected.
As a bonus, I've added the end titles to "The House On Carroll Street".
This is my upload and someone else as well. N-Joy! :)

WHERE THE LILIES BLOOM -Earl Scruggs Revue
Cheers to Isbum for this post!

http://rapidshare.com/files/129235467/WTLBloom.zip.html

Pleasant score from a classic novel. Scruggs was a musician noted for perfecting and popularizing a 3-finger
banjo style that is a defining characteristic of bluegrass music.

This is a fine effort from a composer who only scored a handful of films. It's quite good. It has a hearty main title and a lovely theme. One cue has a touch of electronics, which is unusual for a western.
Enjoy :)

THEMES FROM THE GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER - Elmer Bernstein

http://massmirror.com/124fa583dd2d2000ca46a8d0f54899f0.html

I've been meaning to post this one for quite some time. It's really a wonderful collection of themes from a classic TV show that aired from 1953-1962.

The episodes scored on this Lp starred some of Hollywood's finest ; Fred Astaire, Joan Crawford, Tony Curtis, Joan Fontaine, Ray Bolger, Ernie Kovacs, John Cassevetes and Ronald Reagan among others.

It's vintage Elmer at his best. :)
